The Copperstate Model Yacht Club (CMYC), was founded in 1974 for the purpose of promoting the sailing, racing and building remote control model sailboats. CMYC is one of the oldest clubs sanctioned by the American Model Yachting Association (AMYA). CMYC sails every Sunday morning at Scottsdale's Chaparral Lake located at the northeast corner of Hayden and Chaparral Roads. In addition to the Sunday sailing, the club hosts a number of one to two day regional regattas which draws skippers from throughout Arizona, California and Texas.
The Club races two classes of R/C sailboats, these are the 36/600 and the 50/800 or Marbleheads. CMYC's fleet of 36/600 is one of the foremost in the country with over thirty registered boats. The 36/600 class sailboat is ideally suited for sailing in moderate winds which are prevalent in Scottsdale as well as the greater Phoenix area.
Equally suitable to the local sailing conditions is the 50/800 Marblehead which is the most popular R/C sailboat class Internationally and in the U.S.. Both are designated developmental classes with few restrictions on the design deyond hull length and sail area.
| 36/600 | 50/800 | |
|---|---|---|
| Hull Length | 36 inches | 50 inches |
| Sail Area | 600 sq. inches | 800 sq. inches |
How to Get Started - R/C sailboat equipment requirements are modest. It includes a hand held R/C transmitter (2-3 channel) for sailboat control; together with a compatible R/C receiver, sail winch and rudder servo installed in the sailboat.
While R/C sailboat racing is as keen and exciting as other forms of R/C competition, it enjoys the aspects of being less expensive, clean and quiet with no oils or fuels invoved. Therefore it is extremely amenable to all ages and gender.
Competitive pre-assembled sailboat or kits are limited but available from several mail-order sources. Most beginners find it easier and simpler to acquire a competitive sailboat from a CMYC member. Alternately, CMYC club members are readily available to help in obtaining the necessary components and assisting in the sailboat assembly and outfitting.
